VSP Trays or Vacuum Skin Packaging is a carded pack in which the product (or product) is placed in a piece of tray and a sheet of clear plastic is placed over the product and the tray. The printed cardboard/tray usually has a heat seal coating . Plastic film (LDPE, PVC, ionomer, etc.) is heated to soften and coat the product on the card/tray. Vacuum is sometimes used to help with a secure fit. The Skin Film is bonded to the heat seal coating on the cardboard.
The skinned section may then need to be cut into individual units. Once the skin wrap is tightly secured, cuts such as keyways, fillets, and internal die cuts can be added during the cutting process. Sometimes self-adhesive film with uncoated cardstock is also used. The skin wrap is a bit like a blister Packaging, the main difference is that the plastic surrounding the product is formed on the product, not pre-formed.
Fresh meat can be vacuum packed and peeled. Specialized packaging operations are required to maintain the appearance and safety of the product. Temperature control during the cold chain is necessary for proper shelf life.
