What is Modified Atmosphere Packaging?
In practice, MAP means replacing the ambient air in a package or package with a gas mixture (usually nitrogen and carbon dioxide). Fresh produce packaged in modified atmosphere packaging has a longer lifespan and can even be transported over long distances while maintaining its quality. Examples of products that require Map Trays packaging include meat and sausage products, dairy products, breads, fruits and vegetables, fish or convenience products. MAP Trays packaging requires high standards and must be controlled and monitored to ensure safety. Therefore, food manufacturers rely on modern MAP gas technology and different levels of quality assurance to maximize process safety.
Why use MAP technology for packaging?
1. Extended shelf life and high quality packaging. Food products packaged in a protective atmosphere spoil more slowly, i.e. have a longer shelf life, thus reaching consumers in optimal conditions.
2. Respect the environment. Longer shelf life and packaging integrity mean fewer problems during long-distance transportation, resulting in less or no waste from poor-quality food.
3. More sales opportunities. MAP packages can be transported over long distances without changing their contents, enabling manufacturers to cover a very wide range of geographic and even global targets.
4. Fewer preservatives, healthier food. MAP packaging extends the shelf life of foods and in many cases reduces or eliminates the use of preservatives. The end consumer will be able to buy and appreciate products without artificial additives.
5. Modified atmosphere packaging allows for greater customization of packaging. And those in charge of marketing know that: eye-catching, distinctive, perhaps side by side, is the decisive "call to buy."
