EVOH Barrier MAP Tray is commonly used for fresh produce, meat, and seafood. MAP PP Tray is similar to EVOH Barrier MAP Tray, but it is made entirely from polypropylene material. Fresh Meat MAP Tray is specifically designed for meat products, which uses a combination of gases, such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen, to create a modified atmosphere that helps to preserve the freshness and quality of the meat.
Modified Atmosphere Packaging
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), modified atmosphere packaging "involves actively or passively controlling or changing the atmosphere surrounding a product within a package made of various types and/or combinations of films."
A modified atmosphere can be defined as an atmosphere specially created by altering the natural distribution and composition of atmospheric gases. When applied to packaging, this involves modifying or controlling the composition of the gases contained within each package to provide optimal conditions to extend shelf life and reduce oxidation and spoilage of perishable food and beverage products.
There are two different modified atmosphere packages: passive and active. The FDA defines Active Modified Atmosphere Packaging as "the displacement of the gas in the package, which is then replaced by the desired gas mixture," and Passive Modified Atmosphere Packaging as "when the product is packaged using the selected film type, and the desired atmosphere It forms naturally due to the respiration of the product and the diffusion of gases through the film.”
How does MAP Packaging protect food?
In principle, modified atmosphere packaging technology protects fresh food by reducing its exposure to oxygen. Oxygen causes oxidation, which can lead to discoloration, spoilage, and off-flavors and textures. By reducing or controlling the amount of oxygen present in the packaging, food can stay fresh longer, extending its shelf life and ensuring that it is attractive to consumers.
Modified atmosphere packaging has become increasingly important in the 2020 COVID-19 outbreak, and where consumers are instructed to leave their homes as little as possible, MAP packaging can greatly extend the shelf life and freshness of food products. As a result, food manufacturers and packers are seeing a significant increase in demand for packaged foods using MAP packaging technology.
