CT uses X-ray beam to scan the layer with a certain thickness of a part of the human body. The detector receives the X-ray passing through the layer, converts it into visible light, converts it from photoelectric to electrical signal, and then converts it into digital by analog/digital converter, which is input into the computer for processing. The processing of image formation is like dividing the selected layer into several cuboids with the same volume, which is called voxel.
The scanning information is calculated to obtain the X-ray attenuation coefficient or absorption coefficient of each voxel, and then arranged into a matrix, that is, a digital matrix. The digital matrix can be stored in disk or optical disk. Through the digital/analog converter, each digit in the digital matrix is converted into small blocks with varying gray levels from black to white, that is, pixels, and arranged according to the matrix, that is, the CT image is formed. Therefore, CT image is a reconstructed image. The X-ray absorption coefficient of each voxel can be calculated by different mathematical methods.
The working procedure of CT is as follows: according to the difference of X-ray absorption and transmission rate of different tissues of the human body, it uses highly sensitive instruments to measure the human body, and then inputs the data obtained from the measurement into the electronic computer. After the electronic computer processes the data, it can take a cross-sectional or three-dimensional image of the examined part of the human body, and discover the small lesions in any part of the body.
