Trapezoidal screw has two specifications, imperial and metric. The imperial standard is ACME, and the metric standard is Trapezoidal. The thread types of the two are very similar, and there is no obvious performance advantage between each other. The choice of imperial or metric products usually depends on two aspects: first, the ideal lead suitable for the application (the distance that the threaded screw advances per revolution); second, what unit is suitable for the equipment to be designed. In many cases, the choice of imperial or metric system depends purely on the lead available. Once the lead parameters are set in the control system, the difference between using imperial or metric screws is almost zero.

Nuts are usually made of internally lubricated polymer materials. Trapezoidal screws are also used in laboratory and life science equipment, such as DNA sampling equipment, scanning equipment, and fluid handling equipment. Other applications include engraving, rapid prototyping, inspection and data storage equipment. In addition, sliding screws with metal (usually copper) nuts can also be used for heavy-duty lifting.
