In an indirect system ,also know as "closed loop", a simplepump moves an antifreeze solution through a loop into the solarheat collector, through the collector's pipes,and out of thecollector, then the sun-warmed anti-freeze solution flows into aheat-transfer until where it warms the cool water heading into aconventional hot water tank

The anti-freeze solution then returns to the pump and againflows into the solar collector without ever mixing with thebuilding's water

Thus, water is indirectly heated ,indirect systems areencouraged in climates with extended periods of below-freezingtemperatures
